The Schiotz Tonometer works on the principle of indentation tonometry.
When the tonometer is placed on the cornea of the eye, a weighted plunger gently presses against the corneal surface. The degree of indentation produced on the cornea depends on the intraocular pressure inside the eye.
If the intraocular pressure is high, the cornea resists indentation and the scale reading is lower.
